A robust and clean Xinomavro expression by Apostolos Thymiopoulos.
The grapes are harvested from several parcels around the village of Fytia from 26 years-old organically certified vines that are not irrigated. The vineyards lie at an altitude of 450-650 metres in the Naoussa region with its warm continental climate, tempered by the cooling winds coming either from Vermio mountain or from the sea. The lower temperatures during the ripening season offer freshness and elegance to the wines.
The grapes are macerated for 18 days with a small percentage being whole clusters, which are spontaneously fermented on steel tanks with indigenous yeasts for 1 to 3 months, before being aged for 8 months in French oak vats.
The wine is characterised by elegant tannins and aromas of summer, heavy on strawberry, red berries, a hint of herbs, tomato and black olive. The taste is long-lasting and draws you in.
The wine has a large body and goes well with many kinds of food, from fish and poultry to vegetables and meat - or enjoy it on its own slightly chilled. The Naoussa Alta also goes very well with the foods served at Christmas: duck, pork and other foods heavy in fats and acid.
The expression of this wine is heavier and more full-bodied than Thymiopoulos Vineyards Young Vines, but not quite as bombastic and tannin heavy as Thymiopoulos Vineyards Gi & Uranos (Earth & Sky).
It has been said of the Naoussa Alta, that it is the wine from the Thymuopoulos portfolio, that can best be compared to an elegant Burgundy red.
You may have enjoyed this wine at restaurants Alchemist, Domestic, Anarki, Brace, Meyer's Deli, Mêlée and Mastro.
The last few bottles of the 2019 vintage, are currently to be found at Levi and Nordlandet.
